Major Worldwide IT Outage Caused by software update
Millions of worldwide businesses woke up this morning (19th July) to find themselves unable to log into their IT systems, due to a software update.
Cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike, whose software had run an automatic update overnight, identified the issue as a ‘defect found in a single context update for Windows hosts’, with a fix being put in place by noon on Friday, with the Austin, Texas based company keen to stress that this was not a security incident or cyber attack.
While thankfully not malicious, the outage affected businesses across a range of industries, with flights grounded, online banking systems left inaccessible and people unable to book a GP appointment.
Perhaps more than anything, the issues that were first felt in Australia before spreading around the globe as the rest of the world woke up have shown our reliance on and importance of robust IT networks in both our personal and business lives.
